Enclosed battery died relatively soon after purchase. Does not seem to be accurate at higher activity levels.
Very useful December 26, 2006 20 out of 21 found this review helpful
Very handy monitor. The conductive belt needs to be wet for heart beats to be picked up correctly, if at all. Once into the running, the belt remains wet off sweat, so it's the initial mile that needs to be taken care of. Water alone worked perfectly fine. Any inaccuracies and jumping around are caused either by the strap slipping or the conductive belt not wet enough.
I've run a couple of round of about 8 miles each and after the first mile both times it feels very natural. The first mile is a bit self-conscious, but after that, it's no longer an issue as you gets into the running routine.
One super nice feature: my gym has a Matrix treadmill and it only says it supports Polar brand monitors. But I stepped on it and the treadmill picked the signal up auto-magically. Super nice. On the flip side, the watch-receiver then starts to act up. Looks like only one of them can receive the correct signal at a time. Anyways, it seems like when both receivers are working (i.e. treadmill and the enclosed watch), the treadmill gave better numbers. So it looks like the emitter is fine, but the watch may not be picking up data frequent enough or something.
Anyway, this is an awesome monitor, especially for the price. This is my second Omron purchase and the brand is a winner.
A very nice basic monitor December 23, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I took up running as a way to control my diabetes and high blood pressure without medications. The heart monitor is a great way to set and maintain training goals.
The monitor is a very basic unit. It comes with a chest strap for the heart rate transmitter and the rest is basically a watch with the added function of indicating your heart rate. It does have a stop watch function. It does not have any memory functions and will not average you heart rate during your workouts. You can however set it to alarm during your workout to indicate when you have gotten below and over your target rates. It is easy to set and use. I use different target rates for training and races and types of races. The drawback to the alarm is that in areas with more background noise the alarm is hard to hear. If you are running a race as loud as the Indianapolis Mini (Half Marathon) it would be impossible to hear. So keep in mind that you must visually check your rate from time to time.
The chest strap is an easy fit that takes a little getting use to but is not a problem. The instructions say to use a good contact jell to get a good constant reading. The instructions omit a recommendation for the jell or where one might find such. Some of the running site message boards have posted that pharmacies have said that KY Jelly works very well. I have not tried this to date. I wet it down and rely on the sweat of the run to keep it nice and damp. I have used the monitor from a low of 16 degrees to the mid 80s with little or no problem. The thing I have noticed is that for about the first half mile it can at times tend to give some really nutty results, as in 210 beats per minute for example. As long as I am aware of my pace and perceived effort this is not a real problem. And the use of KY Jelly may end that little problem.
Looking for a nice basic heart rate monitor, this is the one.
Picture and Accuracy are deceptive December 20, 2006 2 out of 18 found this review helpful
The picture shows the watch and another item....that other item needs to be strapped to your rib cage which is uncomfortable to wear. I would be able to go through the discomfort, but the product was not reliable either. As a consumer, I would like to know the accuracy. If it says my heart is beating 50 beats a minute, as an engineer, I know that it may not be the case. I want to know the range that my heart may ACTUALLY be beating at.
My heart beat true with the Omron Heart Rate Monitor November 10, 2006 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
great product, easy to use and simple to follow instruction, keeps me in the zone to burn calories while on my walks. i recommend it to anyone. it doesnt interface with gym exercise equipment but i dont use them anyway and it doesnt cost 3 to 4 times what one of those do. buy it, wear it, be happy.
